Bird Watching

Arranmore is a popular destination for bird watchers as we have numerous visits from rare species, most notably the rare Snowy Owl.

We also have an old Golden Eagle’s nest which is situated high in the cliffs and can only be seen from the sea. This wouldn’t be common knowledge to people outside the island.

There should be something for both the enthusiast and Ornithologists.

Typically though, speicies include

  • Hawks.
  • Puffins.
  • Arctic Skija.
  • Seagulls.
  • Gannets Morus bassanus.
  • Meadow Pipits (Anthus pratensis) and Rock Pipits (Anthus petrosus ).
  • Ravens
  • Redwings
  • Petrels.
  • Kittiwake. ( Rissa ).
  • Crows.
  • Starling.
  • Warblers.

Rare Sightings.

  • Bramblings ( Fringilla montifringilla ), a type of Finch / Chaffinch.
  • Snowy Owl.
  • Eagles
